Alexandre Istrati was born in 1915 and died in 1991 in Paris. At the early age of 9 Istrati began to paint and in 1938 Istrati received his diploma from the art academy of Bucharest where he was a profrossor until 1947. He married the Romanian painter Natalia Dumitresco in 1939. Alexandre Istrati received many awards for his work in Bucharest. Because of a scholarship in 1947, Istrati and his wife were able to move to Paris where they definitively established themselves. Istrati studied with Andre Lhote at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris. Istrati and Dumitresco befriended the sculptor Constantin Brancusi, and worked in a studio next door until Brancusi’s death in 1957. Together with his wife, Istrati reorganized the "studio Brancusi" in the Pompidou Center dedicated in 1977. Istrati's pictures are colorful and romantic; they open a world of sounds and colors. What appears chaotic is a passionate growth of the colors. Sometimes the color swabs sit easily like powder on the canvas, other times they are sucked in with the movement of the composition.

Etienne Roudenko was born in Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine, now called Kremenchug, on July 31, 1897. He studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the painter Camille Boiry [1871-1954] and in 1959 he moved to New York where drip action painting became his exclusive painterly expression. While Roudenko’s artistic force was clearly focused on Jackson Pollock-inspired techniques, he was also committed to refining his own specific style. Pollack worked in oils and enamel on canvas, while Roudenko worked in tempera and acrylics on artist’ board or heavy paper. Pollack’s drip action paintings were often mural-sized, while Roudenko limited his largest works to 30 x 40 inches. Stylistically, Roudenko, like Pollack, used a stick or hardened paintbrush to cast his web-like drippings. Also unlike Pollack, Roudenko worked in a two part process. He first created a background pattern with pools of one or two pigments that he then layered with a final orchestration of highly-controlled wispy drippings.
